News From Rwanda

Our friend Michael Tennant in Rwanda keeps us up to date with news from Muhazi School. Here is an extract from his letter:

So, attached, are assorted pictures of the water tank at Muhazi being officially opened.  There are pictures of assorted dignitaries opening the facility.  The Chair of Governors (an Anglican Pastor), the builder and local secretary of the Sector (one level down from the District) are there.  The head girl and head boy of the school are there.  Some teachers are there, too, trying out the water.  I figure, making a speech in celebration of the donors.  The school choir sings, and there is a picture of a picture on the blackboard in which we celebrated with Coke, samosas and a cake.

There are also pictures of work going on to use the money that your children raised over the summer.  The school decided to “pave” two classrooms, so that instead of operating in classrooms with mud floors, they would have a solid floor.  In addition they have added skylights into the classrooms to give pupils and teachers more light.  Alongside pictures of the building work are also pictures of pupils being educated outdoors.  With no spare classrooms, the children had to have outdoor lessons under the trees.  Fortunately for them, it didn’t rain during the work.

The £300 didn’t quite cover the cost of all the work, so the school has used money from its own capitation – no bad thing because it strengthens their own commitment to move work forward.  However, much praise was heaped upon Hill Top Primary for your support to the school.

I hope the pictures will convey something of the celebration for you, and that you can share them with children in school.

Best wishes,

Michael

He also enclosed some pictures of the wedding of Immaculee, a friend of Michael's. This shows us some of the similarities and differences in our two cultures.
