Year 3

Welcome to Year 3!

Our teachers this year are: Mrs O'Donovan and Mrs Stead

Our homework is set every Friday and due back in the following Thursday. Homework will consist of reading, spellings and a specific Literacy, Topic or Maths homework activity.

At Hill Top we expect children to read at least three times a week at home. Please support this by encouraging your child to do this and sign their reading record book each time.

If homework is not completed or submitted by the due date this will result in a break time detention, as agreed in the school policy.

Children will write their homework in their homework diaries.

Things to remember:

Thursdays: Homework due

Fridays: Homework set

Monday and Friday: P.E. Monday and Thursday

Temples, Tombs and Treasures

The Big Idea - The people who helped create the first civilisations were not unlike you and me. Today we can learn a lot about these people and their life through the things they left behind - from everyday objects to magnificent and rare treasures.

This week we have enjoyed learning all about how Tutankhmen’s tomb was discovered by Howard Carter and the treasures he found inside. On Tuesday we researched these treasures and made a museum catalogue for our own museum.

Last week for our exit point we welcomed a Victorian archaeologist, who brought in lots of artefacts for us to draw, showed us weapons from Ancient Egyptian times and taught us how to play Senet. We had a great day.

Saving the World - The Rainforest

The Big Idea -  Rainforests once covered 14% of our world’s surface. Now they cover less than 5%. Every second, an area of the rainforest the size of a football field is being destroyed. Some scientists believe that, if we lose our rainforests, we might put our whole planet at risk. What will we do to help save the rainforest?

Christmas Christingles!!

We have had a wonderful day today, making Christingles with Mrs Towler.

Paintings, Pictures and Photographs

The Big Idea - We see visual images all around us every day and they are produced for a variety of purposes. Some help us by providing important information, some entertain us, some are a record of an event or person, and
some are used to advertise and sell us things. We need to be able to interpret and use all different forms
of visual representation in our daily lives.

During this topic we have researched a variety of artists and looked at various art techniques. The children have enjoyed sketching, painting and writing biographies on artists.

Feel the Force

The Big Idea - Without forces to push and pull us along, nothing on Earth or in the wider Universe would move. Forces are so important that it is almost impossible to imagine a world without them – and yet, they are
invisible.

The second part of this half term we studied the topic of Forces. This included forces such as gravity and friction and how magnets work.

How Humans Work

The Big Idea - Your body is like an engine that never stops working. By knowing how your body works you can learn to look after it better and stay healthy.

The first few weeks of the half term, the class looked at parts of our body and how live a healthy lifestyle. Take a look at some of our amazing work we have produced.
